Repoussé, toreutics: these are terms related to artistic metalworking techniques of decorating objects, jewelry and interiors with minute detailed bas-reliefs. Low-sculpted ornaments and illustrations on shiny metal plates were broadly used in the ancient world from Japan to India, in the Mediterrenean as well as in cultures of South America. Still popular in Belle Epoque, this meticulous, highly time-consuming thus luxurious craft now became marginalized and almost forgotten.
I decided to take up this tradition and use it in a contemporary context. With a reconstructive approach I create adornments inspired by historical interiors of ancient Rome, Persian palaces and Art Deco residences. I focus on the elements of furniture such as decorated screen, door and wall panels. I use these metal canvases to hammer motives taken form Japanese and Byzantine art.
I use the traditional techniques of repoussé, gilding and silver plating as well as chemical tinging to enhance the contrast and dynamics of the composition. With my work I intend to bring back the thrill that careful metalwork decoration can give to its users.
Repus, toreutyka - to nazwy antycznych technik zdobniczych polegających na precyzyjnym wykonaniu płasko-rzeźbionej dekoracji na powierzchni blachy. Od starożytności, toreutycy, za pomocą młotków, dłut i punc wykonywali i ozdabiali precyzyjnym ornamentem metalowe przedmioty użytkowe i biżuterię. Obecna jeszcze w Belle Epoque, ta niezwykle pracochłonna i kosztowna antyczna technika uległa na jakiś czas zapomnieniu i marginalizacji.
Postanowiłem podjąć tę tradycję: szukam dla repusu współczesnych zastosowań. Tworzę dekoracje nawiązujące do wystroju wnętrz rzymskich willi, perskich pałaców i rezydencji Art Deco. Wykonane przeze mnie metalowe panele naścienne, płyciny drzwi i parawanów zdobią motywy zaczerpnięte z japońskiego drzeworytu, sztuki Indii i Bizancjum.
Wykorzystuję nie tylko repus, złocenie i srebrzenie: korzystam także z techniki chemicznego barwienia metalu, która wzmacnia kontrast i dynamikę wykonanego reliefu. Moją intencją jest tworzyć kunsztowne, niepowtarzalne elementy zdobnicze, uświetniające nasze otoczenie.
